French Polynesia (overseas territory)
Same as France
90 days
Entry follows French rules (visa-free up to 90 days).
Overseas Territories (UK, Netherlands)
Citizens of UK and Dutch overseas territories follow the same visa-free rules as their metropolitan countries.

Each entry is supported by official data from the Government of Montenegro or diplomatic authorities. In general, Montenegro grants a 90-day visa-free stay to citizens of all countries listed under the Schengen Annex II (including the EU, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and others) as well as several additional states. Belarus, Russia, and Peru receive a shorter 30-day visa-free period based on bilateral agreements.

If a country is not included in the visa-free list, its citizens must obtain a short-term tourist visa (Category C). However, as noted above, holders of a valid visa or residence permit from certain countries (Schengen Area, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Bulgaria, Romania, and others) may enter Montenegro without a national visa for up to 30 days. If you want to explore this topic in more detail, you can consult the official Montenegrin government website at gov.me. Citizens of several neighboring countries and EU member states may also use their national ID cards instead of a passport to enter Montenegro (for stays up to 30 days). All information reflects the latest official updates as of late 2025.

Important note about upcoming visa policy changes

Montenegro has been working for many years to join the European Union, and the country is now in the final stages of aligning its entry rules with EU standards. According to recent negotiations and public statements, Montenegro is expected to revise its visa policy in the near future, potentially ending the current 30–90-day visa-free regime for many non-EU countries and introducing visa requirements similar to those used by the EU. Because these changes may take effect soon, it is strongly recommended to verify the latest entry rules with an official Montenegrin embassy or government website before purchasing your tickets to ensure that a visa is not required. I hope this information was helpful, and I wish you a pleasant journey to Montenegro.

What Every Traveler Must Pay

All travelers visiting Montenegro—regardless of whether they enter the country visa-free or with a visa—are required to pay a daily tourist tax (boravišna taksa) for each night they spend in the country. The standard rate is 1.00 EUR per adult per day. Teenagers aged 12–18 pay half the amount (approximately 0.50 EUR), and children under 12 are fully exempt from the tax. This fee applies to tourists staying in hotels, guesthouses, private rentals, and any other form of accommodation. In most cases, the tourist tax is collected directly by your accommodation provider. Hotels, licensed apartments, holiday homes, and other registered properties are required to register your stay and add the tax to your bill as a separate item. However, if you are staying in a private home, an unregistered apartment, or accommodation that does not collect the tax on your behalf, you must register your stay within 24 hours at the local tourism office and pay the tax yourself. Travelers can make this payment not only at tourist information centers but also at post offices and designated tourist kiosks, which serve as official payment points throughout Montenegro. Although certain exemptions exist for specific categories—such as small children, participants in official school trips, or individuals staying long-term—most visitors should expect to pay the tax for every night of their stay. The funds collected are used to support local tourism services, infrastructure, and community development. To avoid fines, ensure that your stay is registered correctly and that the tax is paid on time, whether through your accommodation or at an official payment location. Note: The tourist tax is most often paid in cash, so make sure to have enough cash on hand in advance. Keep all payment receipts until you leave the country.
